Why Is My Dishwasher Filling With Water When It Is Off?

Water that newly enters a dishwasher between cycles may come through the fresh-water inlet or flow backward through the drain. Clear versus dirty water is a useful clue, but appearance alone cannot confirm a leaking valve or a backflow problem.
If the water level is rising or a leak is developing, stop use, close the dishwasher’s water-supply valve if safely accessible and switch off its identified breaker from a dry, safe location. Turning off power alone may not stop a mechanically leaking inlet valve. Do not force a stuck valve or reach into wet electrical areas.

Why is a dishwasher filling with water when not in use?
A dishwasher filling with water when not in use may have a leaking inlet valve or drain water flowing back into the tub. Clear or dirty water and the timing can help narrow the investigation, but do not confirm the cause.
The inlet valve normally closes after filling. Debris, mineral buildup or wear can prevent it from sealing, allowing a slow seep even without electrical power. A control or wiring fault may instead energize the fill circuit when it should be closed. Neither possibility can be confirmed by water appearance alone.
Record whether water stops returning after the accessible supply valve is closed. That supports investigating the supply side, but does not by itself identify the failed component. Do not reconnect power or reopen water repeatedly to reproduce a leak.
How drain water can flow back into the tub
The drain hose connects to the sink drainage system, disposal or air-gap arrangement. Routing that does not meet the model’s installation requirements, a displaced hose or a restricted connection may allow water to return. A high loop and an air gap are not interchangeable requirements for every installation; follow the appliance instructions and applicable local requirements.
Look only at the accessible hose under the sink. Note its routing and any association with normal sink use. Do not deliberately fill and drain the sink to provoke backflow, disconnect hoses, remove a disposal plug or pull out the dishwasher. A filter blockage can explain water left after a cycle, but does not by itself explain newly entering water while off.
